SPACE MATERIAL SCIENCE
Synthesis and study of new materials to use in aerospace applications and in industry. Establishment of technologies for obtaining them
Department "Space Materials Science" at SRTI-BAS is designed to provide ground treatment of an experiment "Voal" of the national space program "Shipka" and preparation of samples for space and synchronous experiments. After successfully completing the flight of the second Bulgarian cosmonaut tasks of the section are related to processing and analyzing the results of these experiments. The purpose of the space experiment "Voal" is to examine the conditions of microgravity processes of mass segregation in the system W-Al. An additional objective is to create a lightweight and good mechanical properties of composite material system based W-Al.
In July 1990 with the decision of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences, section "Space Materials Science” is transferred to the SRTI-BAS. Scope of activities of the department are scientific and applied research (experimental and theoretical) in the synthesis and study of new promising materials, getting new versions of existing materials and their application in aerospace, industrial and security.
