HISTORY

In 1969, at the Presidium of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, the Research Group on Space Physics was established. By a Resolution of the Board of the Council of Ministers since 1975, this Group evolved into the Central Laboratory for Space Research (CLSR), which in 1987 was reorganized into the Space Research Institute at the BAS (SRI–BAS).

In October 1990, the Solar-Terrestrial Influences Laboratory at the BAS (STIL–BAS) was established. In 1996, the STIL–BAS evolved into Central Solar-Terrestrial Influences Laboratory at the BAS (CSTIL–BAS) with a branch in the Town of Stara Zagora, and in 2008 the CSTIL–BAS was reorganized into the Solar-Terrestrial Influences Institute at the BAS (STII–BAS).

Under the reform carried out at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, by a Resolution of the General Assembly of the BAS of 23 March 2010, the Space Research Institute (SRI) and the Solar-Terrestrial Influences Institute (STII) merged to form a new unit – the Space and Solar-Terrestrial Research Institute at the BAS (SSTRI–BAS).

Now the Institute is renamed to Space Research and Technology Institute (SRTI).
