Taking into account the large-scale introduction of aerospace technologies in life, in 2004 the management of the Space Research and Technology Institute at Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) decided to organize annual international scientific conferences Space, Ecology, Safety (SES). The aim is to establish new and deepen existing international links with scientists in the field of space science and technology, to promote space technology transfer and innovation, to contribute to solving important problems in the field of economy, agriculture, environment, security and defense, to create of new scientific knowledge, attracting young people to space science and practice.

By 2021, 17 SES conferences have been held with the participation of leading foreign scientists, scientists from the BAS, lecturers from civilian and military universities, PhD students, students, teachers and specialists from companies.

Members of the scientific and program committees are prominent Bulgarian and foreign scientists – academics, corresponding members and professors from over 10 countries. Scientists from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belgium, Bulgaria, China, Egypt, France, Great Britain, Ghana, Germany, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Israel, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Macedonia, Mexico, Moldova, Norway, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland, Sweden, Turkey, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Ukraine, USA, and others have participated as lecturers, authors and co-authors.

The working languages of the Conference are Bulgarian, English and Russian.

The papers presented at the Conference are published in the PROCEEDINGS SES, included in the NACID (National Center for Information and Documentation) Reference List. The total number of published reports is over 1000, and the total volume of these collections is more than 4500 pages.

The last SES 2021 conference was financially supported by the Research Fund (KP-06-MNF /12 - 19.08.2021), thanks to which leading scientists were invited as lecturers and a color SES 2021 Proceedings was published, containing 59 reports in volume 355 pages.
